Exodus interview with Tom Hunting

By: Carlos Vila

AAMM: Exodus has been around for almost 30 years now, How do you guys feel about having such a long carrier?
Tom: It feels great! you know. All this time and we are still able to do this. I think it’s amazing that after so many years people still like what we do and come out to the shows and buy our records. It’s a great feeling.

AAMM: Many years ago you guys played to mostly teenagers but as years go by those teenagers grow up with you and are now adults. Is that an odd sight?
Tom: Well yeah. It kind of like seen yourself in the mirror. All the fans from back when are still with us.
But you’ll be surprise. We don’t just play to old people. Those people have kids now and they come to the shows too. So now it’s a big mix. Old and young, some people bring their kids and it’s great. It’s sometimes strange because we see all this kids running around in jeans and high tops, you know. They most get them from Ebay or something.

AAMM: Exodus is lesser know than Metallica or Slayer in the Mainstream but is still consider one of the pioneers of Thrash. Did you guys ever see the impact of Exodus in the genre?
Tom: I think and still have our own sound. You  know what i mean. Out of all the bands you know when it’s an exodus song and no one else. We never really care for any of that anyways you know. We were into our own thing and we took it in our direction regardless of what any other band was doing at the time. It’s cool that we still

AAMM: Back in the 80’s and 90’s we had all kinds of cheesy music cartoon you know. What do you think of the kids growing up now watching Dethklok and more Metal oriented cartoons?
Tom: I think Dethklok, you have to be a metal fan to really understand it. But the fact that so many people are tapping into it and watching it and making it a more relevant issue goes to show that Thrash is on a revival and that people are understanding it a lot more now. Especially people in the industry are now seen the impact and the influences of 80’s thrash has in modern music.

AAMM: What’s your take on the newer bands that are reviving Thrash and taking it more mainstream?
Tom: I think they are great and wish him all the best. I hope they carry the torch on what we did 20 plus years ago. I like the fact that many of the bands now are
looking back at what we did, and think its great because it says that what we did was timeless and someone in the future will pick it up and think it’s good.

AAMM: What’s currently in your iPod?
Tom: Well, not metal really (laughs) I mean, I get enough metal just by doing Exodus and listening to it all the time. ……
